A former Christian Brother who indecently assaulted 19 young boys at a Limerick school in the 1960s has been given a two-year sentence at Limerick Circuit Court.

Sean John Drummond, 61, and now a father of five, of Broadford Drive in Ballinteer in Dublin, pleaded guilty to 36 counts of indecent assault on 19 boys at Creagh Lane National School in Bridge Street in Limerick on dates unknown in 1967 and 1968.

The victims were all aged between eight and nine at the time of the assaults.

Victims told a previous hearing that many had suffered from alcohol and drug, relationship and learning difficulties as a result of the assaults.

Sentencing the accused man today, Judge Carroll Moran said he was satisfied the abuse had a traumatic effect on the victims who were at a young and vulnerable age at the time of the assaults.

He took into account the accused man's guilty plea.

He also took into account the fact that he lead an isolated life at the time of the offences, where there was not much support from anybody in social or sexual matters.

He also considered the antiquity of the offences committed over 40 years ago.

He imposed a sentence of two years, effective immediately.
