Two prison officers and an inmate are being treated in hospital following a stabbing incident in Mountjoy Prison.
The stabbing happened at 11am in the recreation hall of the A Wing, when an inmate stabbed another prisoner four times in the body and the arm.
Two prison officers who tried to intervene were also stabbed, one in the abdomen another in the arm.
The inmate who is believed to have carried out the stabbing is serving six years in prison and also has 60 other offences for breaches of prison discipline.
The Irish Prison Officers’ Association expressed its concern about the incident this afternoon.
POA President Jim Mitchell said overcrowded prisons, like Mountjoy, are seeing more of these incidents.
Mr Mitchell called for the moratorium on the recruitment of prison officers to be lifted and further prison spaces to be provided.
The Irish Penal Reform Trust said there has been 13 serious incidents in Irish prisons in the last six months, including the killing of a prisoner in Mountjoy in June.
This indicates a trend towards more violent incidents within the prison system, according to IPRT executive director Liam Herrick.
