A 23-year-old Irishman has died in hospital after being attacked in Sydney, Australia.

Gearóid Walsh was attacked at a takeaway outlet in the Sydney suburb of Coogee last Sunday.

Police say he had been drinking at a number of pubs before the incident, during which he was punched and fell to the pavement.

Mr Walsh was on a life-support machine at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, but New South Wales Police confirmed that he died this evening.

It is understood that the dead man's brother and sister live in Sydney and that his mother has flown to Australia.

Detective Inspector Paul Simpkins said: 'The man only arrived in Australia a month ago and had been spending time between his brother's house in Brisbane and his sister in Randwick.'

Police have issued a description of a man they want to question in connection with the attack.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance.
