The US has asked Switzerland to extradite film director Roman Polanski, who fled sentencing in California for having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.
The 76-year-old was arrested at the request of the US when he flew into Switzerland on 26 September to receive a lifetime achievement prize at a film festival.
Mr Polanski will be able to appeal against any extradition decision to the Swiss Federal Criminal Court and, in the last instance, the Federal Supreme Court.
The Oscar-winning director holds dual French and Polish citizenship.
US judicial sources have warned that the extradition process is complex and could take years if Mr Polanski challenges it.
A Swiss court this week rejected a bid by the director for release on bail, saying the risk that he would flee was too high.
