A man in his 30s is still being questioned in connection with the death of a woman in Waterford City in the early hours of this morning.

He can be detained overnight.

Brenda Ahearne, a 30-year-old, mother-of-three, was found with serious head injuries by gardaí and an ambulance crew in a house at Richardson's Meadows, Kilcohan, shortly after 2.30am.

She was rushed to Waterford Regional Hospital but died of her injuries.

A man in his 30s was arrested at the house and is being detained at Waterford Garda Station.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau today carried out an examination of the house.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a post mortem examination on the body at Waterford Regional hospital this afternoon.

The findings from that examination have not yet been released.

Ms Ahearne, who was originally from Clonmel, was the mother of three children and had been living in the city for some time.

It is understood the man being questioned by gardaí knew the deceased.
