A 63-year-old man who was beaten during a break-in at his home is undergoing surgery at a hospital in Co Mayo.
The retired construction worker was attacked last night at his home in Charlestown, Co Mayo.
Gardaí say the victim sustained injuries to his leg and arms when he was overpowered after answering a knock on the door.
They believe the raider got away with a small amount of money.
A man has been arrested for questioning in connection with the attack and is being held at Swinford Garda Station.
He can be held for up to 24 hours before he must either be released or charged.
Family members and neighbours say they are shocked and appalled at the attack and at the level of violence that was used.
