Blanchardstown - Court hearing case against five men

The jury in the trial of five men charged with falsely imprisoning a Securicor worker and his wife and two sons, and with stealing €2.28m will return to court tomorrow to continue its deliberations.

The 11 members of the jury began deliberations shortly before lunchtime today in the trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, sitting in Blanchardstown.

Five men, all with addresses in Dublin, have pleaded not guilty to falsely imprisoning Paul and Marie Richardson, and their sons Ian and Kevin, on 13 and 14 March 2005.

The five have also pleaded not guilty to robbing €2.28m from Paul Richardson and Securicor.

The men on trial are: 36-year-old David Byrne of Old Brazeel Way, Knocksedan, Swords; Niall Byrne, 27, of Aughavanagh Road, Crumlin; Mark Farrelly, 37, of Moatview Court, Priorswood; 61-year-old Christopher Corcoran of Bayside Boulevard North, Sutton; and Jason Kavanagh, 34, of Parslickstown Court, Ladyswell.

The court previously heard how the Richardson family were held captive at their home in Raheny in north Dublin by an armed gang.

Marie and her sons were held at a location in Co Wicklow, while Paul Richardson was given instructions by the gang to go to work and collect cash as normal for delivery to ATMs and banks.

He was then ordered to bring it to a car park in Chapelizod in west Dublin.

The jury is being asked to return 25 verdicts in the case. Each of the five men on trial faces four charges of false imprisonment and one charge of robbery.

As he sent the jury out to begin its deliberations, Judge Tony Hunt told the jury it was not under any time pressure to return its verdicts.

He told the seven men and four women of the jury it must return unanimous verdicts.

One juror was discharged last Friday because of a personal matter, so the case is continuing with 11 jurors.
