The family of the kidnapped Irish aid worker Sharon Commins has held a private meeting with the Sudanese Ambassador to Ireland Omer Siddig.

Following the meeting in Dublin, a spokesman for the Ambassador said the family had been given an update on the negotiations to secure her release.

They also received a personal letter from Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

The negotiations to secure the release of 32-year-old Ms Commins and her 42-year-old Ugandan colleague Hilda Kawuki are ongoing in Darfur.

The women were abducted last Friday when a gang armed with semi-automatic weapons burst into a compound of Irish aid agency GOAL in the northern Darfur town of Kutum.

Ireland's Ambassador to Egypt Gerry Corr is leading the Irish delegation in the region.

GOAL Chief Executive John O'Shea has expressed satisfaction that the Irish delegation and the Sudanese authorities are doing everything in their power to deliver a successful outcome.

Mr Siddig told RTÉ News yesterday that he was hopeful the armed group holding the aid workers would release them in a matter of days.
