Five arrested in Limerick

Five people have been arrested in Limerick after firearms were seized during searches in the city early this morning.

A pump action shotgun and and a hand gun were seized during a series of house searches in the St Mary's Park Estate.

The gun seizures came during an operation code named Operation Oilean which is aimed at curbing serious public order and drugs activity in the estate.

Two men were arrested in St Mary's Park and three people were arrested in the nearby Ballynanty area. Gardaí had intervened in an arson attempt on a house when petrol was thrown through a letterbox.

The pump action shot gun was seized in a follow up search of this area and three men aged in their late teens and early 20s were arrested.

And in a separate operation in Murroe, Co Limerick, gardaí seized a quantity of cocaine which they believe was intended to be distributed in Limerick city.
