The man suspected of shooting the journalist Veronica Guerin in June 1996 has been found dead in a prison cell in Britain.
Patrick Eugene 'Dutchy' Holland, 70, was found dead at 6am this morning in Parkhurst Prison where he was serving a sentence for conspiracy to kidnap a businessman.
The UK Prison Service said he appeared to have died from natural causes, but that all deaths in custody are subject to investigation.
Holland was jailed for eight years last year for planning a £10m plot to kidnap a businessman in the UK.
He was jailed for 20 years in 1997 after he was caught in possession of 10kg of cannabis, although the sentence was reduced to 12 years on appeal.
He served nine years and was released from Portlaoise Prison in April 2006.
Interviewed shortly afterwards, Holland denied any involvement in the shooting of Ms Guerin.
Holland had already served three lengthy prison sentences in a long criminal career.
In 1981, he was jailed for seven years for armed robbery at a hotel in Ballsbridge, Dublin.
Less than a decade later, he was sentenced to ten years for possessing explosives, detonators and fuse wire.
