The girlfriend of a man who was shot dead as he slept next to her has told a jury at the Central Criminal Court she could identify 34-year-old Trevor McCabe as the gunman.

Nicole Lennon was giving evidence on the first day of the murder trial of Mr McCabe, of 8 Mountpleasant in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan.

He denies the murder of Darren McGrath in his home in Belturbet, Co Cavan on 20 May last year

Darren McGrath was shot twice in the head as he slept in the upstairs bedroom of his home in the Kilconny estate in Belturbet at around 5am.

Ms Lennon, who was in bed next to him at the time told the court she awoke to see someone standing over her.

She said she heard a bang and the person she saw was the accused, Mr McCabe. She said he leaned over her to get closer to Darren's head and fired a second shot.

Ms Lennon said she was terrified. She told the court the gunman was wearing a motorcycle mask over his mouth and neck.

She said she and her partner Darren knew the accused and he had attended the christening of their young daughter. 'I thought him and Darren were friends,' she said.

The couple's 13-month-old daughter was sleeping in another bedroom when the shooting happened.

Trevor McCabe denies murdering Darren McGrath.

Opening the case today, Anthony Sammon, counsel for the prosecution, said 'immediate suspicions' were attached to Mr McCabe. He was arrested a week after the murder in Dublin's north inner city.

A number of other witnesses who were in the house at the time, including the deceased man's brother will give evidence.

This case has involved a cross-border investigation between gardaí and the PSNI.

A car the prosecution claim was used after the shooting was located in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh. Forensic evidence located at a scene in Dromore, Co Tyrone, will also be used as evidence.

The trial continues tomorrow and is expected to last two weeks.
