A solicitor from Co Derry has been jailed for ten years after pleading guilty to inciting loyalist paramilitaries to murder.

Manmohan 'Johnny' Sandhu pleaded guilty at Belfast Crown court last week.

It is the first conviction of a lawyer for this crime.

Sandhu was also found guilty of three counts of perverting the course of justice and another of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

For these crimes, he was given three years on each of the four counts, to run concurrently with the ten years for incitement.

Police had secretly recorded his interviews with clients suspected of loyalist paramilitary offences in Antrim police station.

Initially Sandhu denied the charges, but changed his plea last week.

The Judge concluded that Sandhu had done ‘a wicked thing’ and it was a ‘pernicious and dangerous abuse.’
