The man who raped a 13-year-old girl at the centre of the C case in 1997 has been convicted of raping an 86-year-old woman.

35-year-old Simon McGinley of Latlorcan Court, Monaghan and originally from Dundalk was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court.

His victim was a woman with Alzheimher's disease. She told gardaí he had called to her house at around midnight on 16 June last year and forced his way into her home.

He raped her throughout the night and demanded money before leaving the next day. She said she could not put up a fight because she feared being beaten.

The woman said he came back later that day but she closed her door on him. She then cried for three hours before alerting a neighbour.

McGinley was seen by gardaí staggering around drunk in the area. After his arrest he denied ever being at the house.

When told his fingerprints were found there he said he had helped a relative who carried out work on the home.

The woman's daughter told the court that she was there when he had called to the house some months before offering to power wash her mother's home and had walked uninvited into the house after her.

The trial was told that McGinley's DNA was found on an electric blanket in the woman's bedroom and on her clothing.

After a nine day trial the jury found him guilty of rape and not guilty of burglary.

McGinley was jailed for 12 years in 1998 for raping a 13-year-old girl who was at the centre of the Supreme court action on abortion known as the C case.

After today's guilty verdict Mr Justice George Bermingham directed that McGinley be registered as a sex offender.

He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced in July.
