Thousands of people have attended the State funeral of Garda Robert McCallion who died after being knocked down and seriously injured in Donegal last month.

The 29-year-old was investigating reports of a stolen car in Letterkenny in the early hours of 26 March.

At his funeral service in Swinford in Co Mayo his death was described a great tragedy which has left his family and everybody in his home town searching for answers.

Father Derek Gormley spoke of Robert McCallion’s sporting achievements and said he was a great leader on and off the pitch that showed tremendous determination in everything he did.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Swinford as the cortege made its way from the parish church to Kilconduff Cemetary.

Garda McCallion’s coffin was carried by a bearer party of his former colleagues from the Donegal division.

The cortege was led through the town by the Garda Band.

Almost a thousand gardaí from all over the country took part in the funeral procession.
