A Sligo man has been charged with 118 counts of serious sexual assault and rape.
The man, who is in his 60s, was arrested at 7am this morning and brought to Sligo Garda Station.
He was charged with the offences including 65 charges of rape, which allegedly took place against two victims on dates between 1981 and 1996.
Arresting Garda Pauline O'Neill said the accused made no reply when the charges were read out to him.
State solicitor Hugh Sheridan said the Book of Evidence had been served on the man and the DPP had directed trial by indictment.
Judge Denis McLoughlin directed that the man be sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.
Applying for free legal aid, the man’s solicitor said he was a pensioner and given the seriousness of the charges against him he also applied for a senior and junior case.
This was granted and the man was remanded on his own bail of €100 on condition that he makes no contact, directly or indirectly with anyone involved in the case.
