Four Courts - Murder trial

A jury at the Central Criminal Court has heard that a man was stabbed 43 times in front of his partner and two-year-old child in March last year.

Carlos Byrne, aged 22, of Linnetsfield Square, Clonee, and Lindsey Fahy, aged 25, of Linton Square, Clonee, County Meath, deny murdering Mark Smith.

Mark Smith, aged 31, died from multiple stab wounds in what the prosecution described as a frenzied attack in March last year.

The jury was told that Mr Smith, his partner and his child, collected Carlos Byrne and Lindsey Fahy in Clonee and drove to Fortlawn estate in Blanchardstown.

The victim's partner said she believed the meeting had something to do with money.

The court heard that there was an allegation that Mr Smith was supplying Mr Byrne with drugs.

It is alleged that on arrival Mr Byrne began stabbing Mr Smith in the neck while they were still in the car and the attack continued onto the street.

He received 43 stab wounds in all.

Ms Fahy is accused of stabbing him in the face and kicking him as he lay on the ground.

Both deny the charge of murder.

The victim's partner Emma Shaw broke down in the witness box several times as she described how the attack took place in front of her son.
