A 38-year-old man has been shot and killed in Northern Ireland.

Dissident republicans are being blamed for the attack which happened in the Woodland Avenue area of Derry shortly after midnight.

It is understood two masked men entered a house at around 12.15am.

The man was shot in the chest and he died soon afterwards in hospital.

Two other men were in the house at the time but were not injured.

Detectives from the PSNI are investigating a number of lines of inquiry including a possible drugs link to the killing.

The detective leading the investigation also appealed for information about two cars, a small light-coloured one which the attackers are thought to have escaped in travelling in the direction of the city and a silver Ford Fiesta with two people inside which was also in the area at the time.
