46 people, including one woman, have appeared at a special sitting of Mullingar District Court charged with violent disorder.

The charges relate to a serious public order incident at the Dalton Park Estate in Mullingar last July.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that each face trial on indictment for the offence, which carries a penalty on conviction of up to ten years imprisonment.

Judge John Neilon set bail for many of those before the court at an amount between €100 and €6,000.

He also ordered the accused to stay away from the Ennel Court, Grange Crescent and Dalton Park areas.

All of those in court today will have to sign on at a garda station twice a week.

A number of the accused also face charges under the firearms and offensive weapons act.

They will appear in court again on 16 February.

Those appearing in court today were arrested by gardaí this morning.

The garda helicopter was used as part of the search.

There was a significant garda presence at the court.
