McDonagh wins BAFTA for screenplay

Martin McDonagh has won a BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay for the film ‘In Bruges’.

The award was accepted in London on his behalf by Brendan Gleeson who starred in the film alongside Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes.

Gleeson was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role. The BAFTA went to Heath Ledger for his turn as The Joker in ‘The Dark Knight’.

Director Steve McQueen received The Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement for ‘Hunger’, based on IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, which has already won numerous awards.

Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ was the big winner of the night, taking home seven awards, including best film and best director.

‘The Reader’ star Kate Winslet continues her winning form in the current award season picking up the Best Actress BAFTA.

Mickey Rourke gave an expletive-filled acceptance speech while picking up his award for leading actor for his portrayal of a lonely, washed-up professional athlete in ‘The Wrestler’.

Penelope Cruz won the Best Supporting Actress award for 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'.
