A 49-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of Ann Corcoran in west Cork.

He was arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after 8am this morning and is being questioned at Bandon Garda Station.

Gardaí say they regard the man's arrest as a significant development in the investigation. He can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

The investigation into Ms Corcoran's disappearance has been given similar resources to a murder investigation.

The 60-year-old has been missing from her home near Kilbrittain, west Cork, since 19 January.

Her green Peugeot 206 car was found abandoned around 6km away at Old Chapel outside Bandon last Wednesday.

Since then, garda search teams, the garda water and dog units, the Civil Defence and the public have been conducting a search for the widow.
