Killer wins press photo ban case

A convicted murderer has won a court battle to stop the press publishing unobscured photographs of him.

Ken Callaghan, now aged 40, was sentenced to 21 years in jail in 1987 for beating 21-year-old Carol Gouldie to death and raping her as she lay dying, in east Belfast.

The Sunday Life newspaper in Belfast, part INM, took pictures of Callaghan on a pre-release scheme.

The newspaper said it wanted to publish the images to alert members of the public who may come into contact with him.

However, the judge banned the newspaper from printing unpixellated photos of Callaghan or revealing his address, place of work and travel arrangements.

Mr Justice Stephens said he had to balance the papers freedom of expression against Callaghan’s right to privacy.

He added that Callaghan posed a low to medium risk of re-offending if his photograph was not published.

After the hearing the murdered woman’s family said they were dismayed by the ruling.
