Hopes high for boost from sales

Post-Christmas sales - Up to 70% off in some stores

Thousands of people have been hitting the streets for the annual post-Christmas sales.

Retailers, some of whom are cutting prices by up to 70%, hope it will be enough to boost sales after a disappointing year.

There was plenty of consumer confidence on display in Brown Thomas in Dublin’s Grafton Street this morning as thousands thronged to take advantage of many of the 50% reductions available.

The crowds were a welcome boost for retailers. Nigel Blow, CEO Brown Thomas Group, said it was great to see people in the store.

‘The all important days were before Christmas rather than after’, he said. But he added that ‘it’s got to be healthy to see this many people around’.

Retailers and businesses are closely watching the progress of these sales.

PJ Timmins, CEO Clery & Co, said it is important that the sales go well as they have all the stock in store and there is no shortage of supply. He said he wished demand was a little bit better.

The store has to sell everything they have because they have a lot of new, spring stock coming in over the next few weeks, Mr Timmins said.

After a very anxious few months for retailers, the sight of crowds shopping and spending money is a welcome one.
