Limerick’s chief garda officer has told city councillors and TDs that the investigation of Shane Geoghegan’s murder would be long and protracted, but they were making progress.

Chief Superintendent Gerry Mahon told a meeting of the Limerick city Joint Police committee that major resources were being put into the investigation.

He said they had had seized five weapons and more than €500,000 worth of drugs as part of that operation in the past week.

He said overall in 2008 they had seized 56 firearms and more than €3m worth of drugs as part of Operation Platinum, which is aimed at targeting activities linked to organised crime.

He said as a result of this the number of incidents regarding the discharge of firearms is down significantly on 2007.

He did point out that the rise in the use of heroin in the city is causing concern. 42% of the drugs seized last year was heroin.
