PSNI - Taser discharged during shopping centre incident

The Police Ombudsman in Northern Ireland has appealed for witnesses after police discharged a taser stun gun during an attempted armed robbery at a shopping centre in West Belfast yesterday.

The incident was the first use of a taser by police in the city and only the second time it had been used in Northern Ireland, with the first such incident in Derry.

It happened shortly after 5.30pm last night close to the entrance to the Park Centre shopping complex. A 28 year-old man was arrested.

As with all discharges of tasers and firearms, the incident was referred by the PSNI Chief Constable to the Police Ombudsman for investigation.

A Police Ombudsman team has been at the scene, which has been forensically examined.

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact the Police Ombudsman's Office in Belfast.

The PSNI has 12 Tasers which can only be used by specially-trained officers.

At the end of last month, the High Court in Belfast ruled the police could continue using the controversial electric stun gun.
