A man has been ordered to pay STG£500,000 (€595,000) in unpaid duty on a consignment of cigarettes smuggled into Northern Ireland.

Fifteen million cigarettes were recovered at Battleford Road near Armagh City in November 2005 in a joint operation involving the PSNI and customs officers.

Aiden Francis Grew, aged 52, from Blackwatertown, Co Tyrone, pleaded guilty to having 5m cigarettes.

In addition to the penalty, Grew also received a three-year suspended prison sentence.

Also charged was 44-year-old Henry McLaughlin Coalisland, Co Tyrone.

He was ordered to pay STG£100,000 (€119,000) and given a two-year suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty to a similar charge.

He also admitted possessing criminal property of STG£65,000 (€77,000) in cash and documents.

A third man, Thomas Noel Abernethy, aged 39 from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, also admitted evading duty and was given a two-year suspended sentence. He had a confiscation order imposed to the value of STG£129,000 (€153,000).

PSNI Detective Inspector Ian Montieth of the Organised Crime Squad said the sentences marked the end of a long-running investigation.

He said police believed this investigation would have a substantial impact on organised crime in the Armagh area.

John Whiting of the Revenue and Customs service said the result sent a clear message to anyone tempted to smuggle illegal tobacco products.

He said they would work with other agencies to stamp out the illegal trade in smuggled tobacco.
