Troubles - Team set up to examine 3,200 cases

The specialist police team investigating unsolved murders during the Troubles has been told it will have enough funding to keep going until early next year.

Last week it was revealed that the Historical Enquiries Team faced a €1.75m funding shortfall until its new budget begins next April.

After a promise of extra funding was withdrawn, the team said its work would have to be scaled back significantly.

But last night a spokesman for the Northern Ireland Office said the team would be given the necessary funds to complete its work this year.

The team was set up three years ago to examine more than 3,200 unsolved murders.
