Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's State car has been damaged by fire during an incident in Dublin.

Mr Ahern was attending a book launch in the St Stephen's Green shopping centre at the time and it is understood that newspapers were set alight under the car, which was parked near the centre.

Mr Ahern's garda driver was assisting Mr Ahern, who has a broken foot, into the centre when the incident happened.

A spokesperson for Fianna Fáil said a fire brigade attended the scene.

Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating the incident.

The car will be technically examined, but gardaí say it was a minor incident and no major damage was done to the vehicle.

Mr Ahern was launching a new book by author Deirdre Purcell and referred to what had happened during the launch.

He was driven away in the car after the launch.
