The trial of a 22-year-old Dublin man accused of murdering another man in August last year is under way at the Central Criminal Court.

Dane Pearse, of Londonbridge Drive, Irishtown, has pleaded not guilty to murdering 26-year-old Mark Spellman on 4 August 2007.

The court heard Mr Spellman died from two stab wounds received during an altercation with Mr Pearse at Londonbridge Road.

The trial has also heard evidence from a friend of the deceased who was with him on the night in question.

Oisin Hoctor told the court he, Mr Spellman and another friend had finished their day's work at Google, and had met up at the Beggar's Bush pub.

After spending the night there and at the b51 pub, they were walking home when an altercation took place between the accused and Mr Spellman, who was on Londonbridge Road with his girlfriend.

Mr Hoctor said he saw Mr Pearse running at Mr Spellman, who extended his leg and kicked him.

They all continued on their way but a short time later Mr Hoctor siad he saw Mr Pearse running at Mr Spellman with two weapons in his hands.

The momentum propelled the two men into a garden and when Mr Hoctor reached him a few second later, he said his friend was lying on the ground covered in blood.

He had a bad stab wound to his side and his eyes were glazed.

A garda technical expert who examined the scene told the court there were bloodstains along the 110m stretch of footpath between where Mr Spellman was found and Mr Pearse's home.

During cross-examination, Mr Hoctor denied that it was Mr Spellman who had offered the first violence of the night by kicking the accused. He said it was Mr Pearse who had run at the deceased.

Defence counsel put it to him that this had not happened and that Mr Hoctor had made this up to put his friend in a better light.

Mr Hoctor denied this. He will continue his evidence tomorrow.
