Keohane & Moverly - On trial over man's death

A man and a woman have gone on trial in connection with the murder of a man in Tipperary who was found with 43 knife wounds and his finger cut off.

Kevin Keohane, of no fixed abode, denies murdering 32-year-old Renars Tuleiko at Parnell Park in Thurles in April 2007.

Victoria Moverly, 32, from Yorkshire, denies assault and helping to conceal the body.

At the opening of the trial, the prosecution told the court that this was a motiveless killing.

Mr Tuleiko, a father of two from Latvia, had moved to Ireland in 2005 and was working as a mechanic to send money home. He had started drinking heavily and got to know Kevin Keohane and Victoria Moverly.

The court heard that after drinking with them near their camp site in Thurles a row broke out.

The prosecution claims that Vitoria Moverly stabbed Mr Tuleiko in the lower back and Mr Keohane stabbed him in the neck, delivering the fatal wound.

The jury was told Mr Tuleiko's body had 43 significant and serious injuries - 23 stab wounds and 20 slash wounds to the face.

The trial heard that the naked body was later found by local walkers. All his belongings had been burned.

The little finger of his right hand had been severed and an attempt had been made to sever the little finger on his left hand.

The court heard that Mr Tuleiko's level of alcohol on the night was so high as to seriously inhibit his ability to defend himself against an attack.

The prosecution said Kevin Keohane and Victoria Moverly will claim they were acting in self defence.

However, after the attack Kevin Keohane had a bruised knuckle and Ms Moverly was left unscathed.

Both accused fled to England after the incident but later returned to Ireland and made statements to gardaí.
