The Criminal Assets Bureau says it is now targeting more middle ranking criminals in response to concerns within their own communities about their activities.

The CAB's annual report shows it handed over more than €10m to the exchequer last year and froze another €10m.

It also seized bank accounts, cash, cars, houses, jewellery, a motorcycle and a mobile home.

It has also increased its level of co-operation with UK and the US authorities.

As a result, almost $5m was given to the victims of a US fraud and £500,000 to the Northern Ireland Revenue authorities.

CAB Chief John O' Mahony warned that criminals are now becoming more adept at hiding their money.
