The High Court has approved a settlement of €4.25m in the case of a seven-year-old girl who suffered brain damage due to a lack of oxygen at birth.

Grace Stynes had sued Coombe Women's Hospital in Dublin through her mother Sabrina over, what she claimed, was the mismanagement of her birth in February 2001.

The court heard that a series of errors in the management of her mother's labour was responsible for Grace Stynes cerebral palsy.

The court also heard that Sabrina Stynes had been wrongly given Syntocinon to augment contractions during her labour, which caused foetal distress.

It was claimed that valuable time was lost in attempts to deliver Grace, first by forceps and then by caesarean section.

She was deprived of oxygen at a critical time leading to brain damage, which has left her with significant physical impairment.

Approving the settlement Mr Justice Hanna said that in the midst of the tragedy it may be some blessing that Grace was intellectually sound.

The settlement was reached without admission of liability.
