Ombudsman investigating garda behaviour

Gardaí - Ombudsman investigation

The Garda Ombudsman Commission has begun an investigation into the alleged involvement of certain gardaí with an individual in respect of whom a prosecution was withdrawn.

Six charges of having both heroin and cocaine for sale or supply in Ardee in October 2005 against a convicted drug dealer were dropped in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court last July.

He had pleaded not guilty but the prosecution told the judge that the state would not be proceeding with the case and a nolle prosequi was entered.

The Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy ordered an investigation, which is being led by Assistant Commissioner Michael Carthy and is still ongoing.

A spokesman said the investigation will focus on the alleged involvement of certain members of the gardaí with the individual.
