June Levine, the author and feminist, died this morning in Tallaght hospital after suffering a massive stroke. She was 76.

Most recently active in the women's movement in India, Levine was known in Ireland for her part in the so-called Contraceptive Train in 1971 when she travelled to Northern Ireland to import contraceptives at a time when they were banned in the State.

She recorded her experiences of her activism in the book 'Sisters'. In her book 'Lyn' she recorded the experiences of Lyn Madden, a prostitute who had been abused by convicted murderer John Cullen.

June Levine began a career in journalism as a reporter with The Irish Times - she also worked as a researcher on RTÉ's Late Late Show.

Described by her brother Norman as 'a great sister...who was there for anyone', she is survived by her husband, Professor Ivor Brown, two sons and a daughter.
