Michael 'Dermot' McArdle will not have to return to Spain to receive his sentence for the manslaughter of his wife, Kelly-Anne.

He may even be allowed to remain in Ireland until the end of any appeal process that might arise.

The judge is expected to communicate the sentence directly to the lawyers for the prosecution and the defence, with no requirements for McArdle to be within the jurisdiction.

In the event of a custodial sentence, the judge would then issue an order for McArdle to present himself in Spain for imprisonment.

But McArdle's lawyer has told RTÉ news that he expects his client to be allowed to remain in Ireland until the conclusion of any appeal.

The appeal process in Spain generally takes about one and a half months.
