Co Limerick - Two men died in crash

A fire officer has told Limerick Circuit Court how she saw a body in a high-visibility jacket in the air at the scene of an accident in Co Limerick on 25 February last year.

Niall Shannon, 20, from Ballylongford in Co Kerry denies causing the deaths of Michael Liston and Garda Brian Kelleher in a traffic accident that night.

Fire Officer Sabrina McCarthy worked at Foynes Fire Station with the late Mr Liston.

She told Limerick Circuit Court she was working with him at the scene of an accident that night and was getting a radio from a fire truck when the door was struck.

Ms McCarthy says she looked out through the windscreen and saw a body in a high-visibility jacket in the air moving towards the Askeaton side of the road.

She ran to the area and saw a fireman colleague lying injured on the ground and Mr Liston was on a wall behind him.

There was no response from him, she said.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis said both Garda Kelleher and Mr Liston died from multiple catastrophic injuries, consistent with a high-speed vehicular impact.
