Police in Northern Ireland have appealed for witnesses after the fatal stabbing of a father-of-three in Dungannon, Co Tyrone in the early hours of this morning.

The man has been named locally as Eamonn Hughes.

He was stabbed during a disturbance near his home in the Lisnahull area.

Two women who were at the scene were run over and suffered injuries to their legs when the assailants tried to flee the area in a stolen car.

A short time later, Mr Hughes’ son was badly wounded in the arm from what is believed to be a crossbow bolt.

Mr Hughes' father Frank, a taxi driver, was murdered by loyalist paramilitaries in 1990.

Mr Hughes had returned home after celebrating his daughter's 18 birthday party with a number of friends when the attack took place.

The PSNI and local politicians appealed for anyone who has any information or was near the scene to come forward.

Detectives spent most of the day in the Lisnahull estate carrying out forensic checks and interviewing locals.
