Hauliers have warned they may undertake a campaign of ‘civil disobedience’ in protest at the new charging scheme under barrier-free tolling on the M50.
The Irish Road Haulage Association says heavy goods vehicles should not be charged under the new system as they are forced to use the M50 because of the ban on trucks in the city centre.
The association says its members will also lose out on bulk discounts they enjoy under the current toll system when the new arrangements come into place at the end of the week.
The organisation is now threatening that its members will remove their electronic tags from their vehicles in protest, which in turn could create a massive administrative headache for those running the new system.
The IRHA says its concerns have not been dealt with by the National Roads Authority.
Last week, the NRA said that some of the improvements from barrier-free tolling will be visible after the toll plaza is removed, but that the full benefits will only be seen when the M50 upgrade in completed in 2010.
The new electronic system is due to be switched on at the West Link toll plaza at a minute past midnight on Saturday.
