A 30-year-old man was due in Carrick-on-Shannon District Court tonight to be charged in connection with the death of a young woman in Roscommon.

Gardaí investigating the death earlier recovered a weapon in a house near the location where she died.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy visited the scene this morning and carried out a post mortem examination on the woman's body at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.

A 30-year-old man was being questioned in connection with the death.

The Brazilian woman was in her 20s and had been living in Ireland for 18 months.

She has been named as Kezia Gomaz Rosa who has no other family members living in Ireland. Gardaí have been in contact with her relatives in Brazil.

The victim was a member of the 300-strong Brazilian community in Roscommon. She lived in rented accommodation above a shop on Lanesboro Street.

The alarm was raised just after 7pm yesterday evening when she was attacked in another house a short distance away.

When gardaí arrived at the scene they found her body with stab wounds and began an investigation.
