The case on the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been dropped by Portuguese prosecutors clearing her parents of suspicion of involvement.

Portugal's chief public prosecutor said the case can be reopened if any new leads come up.

Madeleine McCann disappeared from her bedroom in an Algarve resort on 3 May last year, a few days before her fourth birthday.

The parents of Madeleine McCann, Kate and Gerry, are said to be relieved that their status as suspects has been lifted.

A spokesman for the couple said there is a degree of relief but no air of celebration.

The McCanns will hold a live news conference in Rothley, England tonight.

Clarence Mitchell added that they should never have been arguidos (suspects).

'The fact that they have emerged from this without being charged proves that', he said.

The case has grabbed international headlines, especially after police named the parents as suspects.

Police have failed to find the girl or sufficient evidence to charge anybody.

The girl's parents and a third British national, Robert Murat, have been named 'arguidos' or official suspects, but this status has now ended.

Portuguese media had previously reported that the 14-month investigation would be closed because of a lack of evidence.

Detectives submitted their final report to prosecutors at the start of July.
