Five prison officers were taken to hospital following today's incident at Mountjoy Prision.
Four of the officers have since been released but one remains in hospital with serious facial and dental injuries. Two prisoners were also taken to hospital.
The incident began shortly after 4pm when 70 prisoners barricaded themselves into a recreation room on D Wing.
The stand-off lasted just over two hours before prisoners were brought back to their cells and prison authorities restored order.
During the incident, staff retreated from the area and senior management, including the prison governor, were called in to the prison. There was some concern that the prisoners might have broken through to the workshop.
Gardaí were aware of the incident and had requested the help of the Garda Air Support Unit.
The rest of the prison was locked down with all other prisoners returned to their cells.
Overcrowding has been an issue at the prison in recent times and has been raised by a number of groups including the Prison Officers' Association.
There are currently 595 prisoners in an institution designed to hold 420 inmates.
