Gardaí are treating the death of a man in Co Cork as murder.

The body of the 68-year-old retired father-of-five was discovered at lunchtime today in St Francis Avenue off College Road in Cork City.

The scene was examined by local gardaí and the body is expected to remain at the scene overnight.

The State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, is due to arrive at the scene in the morning. A post mortem will then be carried out at Cork University Hospital.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at an incident room in Togher Garda Station on 021 49 47 120.

They would like to hear from anyone who was in the St Francis Avenue area between 11.30pm last night and 1pm today.

They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a man in his mid 20s. He is described as 6' and of thin build, and he may have been carring two small bags or rucksacks.
