Mahon Tribunal - Owen O'Callaghan says he did not talk to the papers

Cork developer Owen O'Callaghan has denied that he leaked Tom Gilmartin's financial difficulties to the newspapers.

The Mahon Tribunal heard that details of Mr Gilmartin's financial problems were published days before two crucial council votes on the Quarryvale development.

Tom Gilmartin was investigated for a £6m tax bill by the UK's Inland Revenue in 1991.

This was reported in a British paper on 12 May, four days before a rezoning vote on Quarryvale in Dublin County Council, and subsequently in Irish papers as well.

When Mr Gilmartin was declared bankrupt in December 1992 it was reported in newspapers days before the council voted on the size of the retail space for Quarryvale.

Mr Gilmartin claims that the tax investigation was given to the newspapers by Owen O'Callaghan and Frank Dunlop to damage his chances of getting financial backers.

But asked today if he was involved, Mr O'Callaghan replied 'absolutely not'.

He said that he did discuss the issue with his lobbyist Frank Dunlop after it was reported in The People, and that Mr Dunlop had been alerted to the publication by a councillor.

But he said they took little notice of the story.
