Police in London are investigating the murder of two French students who were found stabbed and burned to death.
The bodies of Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez, both aged 23, were discovered on Sunday night following an explosion and fire at an apartment in New Cross, southeast London.
Both men had been bound and gagged.
A post mortem examination revealed that Mr Bonomo was stabbed almost 200 times, while his friend had received 50 injuries.
The bio-engineering students were due to return home later this month after a three-month placement at Imperial College London.
Detective Chief Superintendent Mick Duthie said that one line of inquiry was that the attack was a case of mistaken identity.
He said the men's injuries were among the worst police had ever seen.
