Olympic torch in Tibet amid security

The Olympic torch relay has made its way through Tibet's capital amid heavy security three months after deadly riots against Chinese rule.

Hand-picked spectators cheered runners as they carried the torch through Lhasa, after the relay started in front of the former summer palace of the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader.

Pro-Tibet activists argued that the leg in Lhasa should have been cancelled because of the unrest.

Chinese-appointed Tibetan leaders used the passing of the torch relay to defend Communist Party control of the remote Buddhist region and denounce the exiled Dalai Lama.

China accuses the Nobel Peace prize-winning Dalai Lama of inciting violence and trying to undermine the Beijing Olympics, which open on 8 August.

The Dalai Lama denies the charges.
