Irish actor Jim Norton has won a Tony Award at this year's ceremony in New York.

He picked up the Best Performance by a Featured Actor for his part in the play The Seafarer.

The production, by Dublin-born Conor McPherson, was nominated for three other awards, including best play and best director. The awards are Broadway's highest honour.

Congratulating Mr Norton on his achievement, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Martin Cullen said: 'Jim Norton has consistently enthralled audiences with compassionate and moving performances on stage, television and film over a career spanning five decades.

'He is an actor of exceptional versatility and this prestigious award to him for his performance in this demanding central role in The Seafarer is warranted and well deserved.'

Last year, Mr Norton won a Laurence Olivier Award for the same role. He is also known to millions as Bishop Len Brennan in 'Father Ted'.
