Gardaí are appealing for information on the sale of mobile phone credit by retailers in Kilbeggan as part of the investigation into the murder of Christy Hanley.

It is one of almost 200 lines of inquiry being pursued following the murder of the 83-year-old farmer in the Co Westmeath town last Wednesday night.

Gardaí say they also want to talk to an unidentified man in his 30s who was seen in Mr Hanley's company in two local pubs and on the street in Kilbeggan on the same day.

Earlier, at the funeral Mass for Mr Hanley, Fr Barney Maxwell said those responsible for killing the pensioner must be found.

More than 200 mourners gathered at St James' Church in Kilbeggan for the funeral Mass this morning.

Fr Barney Maxwell appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Mr Hanley died after he was attacked in what is believed to have been a robbery at his home in Kilbeggan.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, Garda Superintendent Aidan Glacken said the man being sought is between 30 and 40 years of age. He was wearing blue denims, a blue tracksuit type top and a baseball cap, and was carrying a blue rucksack.

Supt Glacken said there were a number of different sightings of the man, who may be a local person, and he appealed to him to come forward to assist detectives with their inquiries.

Over the weekend gardaí brought in a helicopter to conduct a new search of the Kilbeggan area.
