There was contrasting fortunes for workers in Donegal and Cork today - with 100 new jobs being announced for Co Donegal, while Cork is set to lose almost 50.
Forward Emphasis International is setting up its second contact centre in the Gaoth Dobhair Business Park in Co Donegal. The new centre will create 100 new jobs over the next three years.
But 47 jobs are to go with the closure of the Freescale design and innovation centre in Cork, which invents and produces new technology for mobile phones.
Forward Emphasis International currently employs 200 people at its headquarters in Malin Head in Co Donegal. Today's expansion in Gweedore is being grant assisted by Údarás na Gaeltachta.
Forward Emphasis International is a business processing company that provides telephone solutions, direct mail and back office services to the banking and financial services sector, government and not-for-profit organisations in the UK.
Last week it was announced that Randox Laboratories is to invest €7.5m in a diagnostic manufacturing and research and development facility in Dungloe, Co Donegal.
This will create 135 jobs over the next three years and is also being supported by Údáras na Gaeltachta.
The company said the availability of a 'ready to be occupied' contact centre in the business park and the availability of an already suitably trained workforce in the area were major factors in its decision to locate the new centre in Gaoth Dobhair.
But 47 jobs are to go with the closure of a centre in Cork which invents and produces new technology for mobile phones.
All of the 47 employees at the Freescale design and innovation centre at the Cork Airport Business Park are graduates.
The company has its headquarters in Texas and was formerly owned by Motorola. It was established here over a decade ago.
Staff were informed at meetings this morning that management was beginning a period of consultations with a view to shutting the Cork design centre in September. It is understood that the work currently undertaken in Cork will in future be done in the US.
