The Mahon Tribunal has heard how an insurance company that employed a pro-Quarryvale councillor was given over €1.2m worth of business by developer Owen O'Callaghan.
Former Progressive Democrat councillor Colm Tyndall worked for Marine and General Insurance, which was given contracts for Mr O'Callaghan's sites in Dublin and Athlone.
Company secretary John McLoughlin told the inquiry in a statement that he rejected any suggestion of underhand dealings in the contracts.
He said it was usual for the company to look for business from new ventures in its catchment area.
Mr McLoughlin said in evidence today that Marine and General provided 'wraparound' public liability cover for Mr O'Callaghan's sites at Quarryvale, Neilstown and Athlone.
This included building contractors at Quarryvale.
The contracts started in 1993 and up to 2004 the premiums totalled more than €1.2m.
Mr McLoughlin was shown a letter his then sales executive Mr Tyndall wrote to one of Mr O'Callaghan's companies signed 'Cllr Colm Tyndall, Marine and General Insurance Ltd'.
Mr McLoughlin said he did not know if it was Mr Tyndall's habit to sign his name like that.
