A Dublin man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a 21-year-old Arklow man by hitting him with his car.

Anthony O'Reilly, 22, of Cleggan Park, Ballyfermot, had denied murdering Daniel McDonald on Main Street in Arklow on 2 February 2007.

O'Reilly was also found guilty of dangerous driving causing the death of Mr McDonald and reckless endangerment by grabbing the steering wheel of another car causing it to swerve towards Mr McDonald.

The jury had considered 13 days of evidence, including CCTV footage from inside a nightclub in Arklow where the two men had been fighting, and footage from Arklow's Main Street where the incident happened.

After over seven hours of deliberation, O'Reilly was found guilty of murder by an 11 to one majority.

He will be sentenced on the other matters at a later date.

The victim's immediate family was not in court due to another bereavement in the family. However, they said they wanted to make a victim impact statement to the court.

Mr Justice Kevin O'Higgins said he would not prevent the family from making their statement when the matter comes before the court again.
