Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has led tributes to former President Patrick Hillery, who died last Saturday, saying his commitment to his country was second to none.
Mr Ahern said that Mr Hillery, both as a private citizen and in his public role gave outstanding and unrivalled service to the Irish State and to the Irish people.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said he admired Dr Hillery for his integrity.
The remains of Dr Hillery arrived at the Pro-Cathedral in Dublin city centre this afternoon.
President McAleese was among the many dignitaries and politicians in attendance.
Hundreds of people stood outside and listened as the removal service was relayed to the public on loudspeakers.
The Requiem Mass takes place at 12 noon in the Pro-Cathedral.
The cortege will then travel with a military escort via Marlborough Street to Liberty Hall.
The burial service will be in St Fintan's Cemetery, Sutton.
The funeral service is being broadcast live on RTÉ.ie/live and RTÉ Radio 1
